The Taranaki Honey Company Collective is an industry group made up of the region’s commercial honey producers, and meets regularly to grow the industry, its businesses and those that are providing added-value products.

Facilitated by Venture Taranaki, the group comprises Egmont Honey, Naki Honey, Eltham Apiaries, Pouatu Honey, Forest & Bees Native Honey, Kai Iwi, and Yobees. Federated Farmers, apiculture entrepreneur Neil Walker, and Parininihi ki Waitotara also attend the meetings.

The recent meeting convened at Naki Honey, where the group gained an update on recent developments in processing equipment and supply options in areas such as bee nutrition from NZ BeesWax, while industry body ApiNZ provided a briefing on a proposed industry levy for apiculture.

Taranaki’s commercial honey companies continue to make significant inroads into the international honey market. Naki Honey exhibited at the CBIC show, part of the China Import and Export Fair in Guangzhou China in late October. As China’s prime trade show, the team were exposed to buyers and sellers from China and around the world.

Venture Taranaki provided the company with regional video clips and imagery to assist with promotion, and Naki Honey owner Brett Mascull reported the show went extremely well and that their Guangzhou distributors were also very impressed.

In addition to the international connections fostered, Brett was also asked to present on the New Zealand honey industry, which enabled a further opportunity to showcase Taranaki and the innovation of its honey sector – footage of the company helicoptering hives to and from back-country Taranaki locations reportedly garnered much enthusiasm from the international audience.
