Venture Taranaki welcomes additional support for Regional Tourism Organisations

Venture Taranaki has welcomed the Government’s announcement of $1m support to Regional Tourism Organisations and $10m to Tourism New Zealand to help offset the impacts of the Coronavirus on inbound travel from China.

"While the specifics of the fund are not yet known, any ability to boost domestic marketing is likely to pay dividends for the region," said Venture Taranaki Chief Executive Justine Gilliland.

In the month of December 2019, visitors to Taranaki spent an estimated $35 million - $28m by domestic visitors and $7m by international visitors. Of the international spend, visitors from China accounted for about $200,000 in spending

"Although not a large amount overall, February is traditionally the key month for expenditure from the Chinese market, so the funding announcement is timely as the impacts of travel restrictions are felt."

"We look forward to learning more about the fund and to working with Tourism New Zealand to share our region with other international markets. In the last 12 months Venture Taranaki has worked with TNZ to gain more than 44 international media articles worth more than $8.3 million in equivalent advertising costs."

"Tourism NZ’s connections in offshore markets are both extensive and effective, and additional resourcing to extend these links will only benefit regional New Zealand."
